Compostable materials
Recycle your food scraps, help the air and soil
As much as 40% of food is wasted and sent to landfills, where it produces methane, a gas that is 84 times worse for the environment than carbon dioxide. In contrast, nothing is wasted in nature--everything becomes food for something else. Composting food waste prevents it from releasing methane gas and safely returns its rich nutrients back to the soil.
Compostable items
We compost all food and yard waste, and accept drop-offs at our Balls Ford Road Composting Facility (now Hansen Farm Road!). Everyone is welcome to use the site—a 5-gallon bucket of food scraps is usually just a dollar or two—and, if you're a Prince William County resident, you can drop off your compostable materials for free! We have additional information for commercial haulers.
